Back again with another Wiggidies Wednesday here at 119 where we showcase old school tracks from way back before us 119’ers were 119’ers and were just Wiggidies Crew in a basement. For today’s installment we’ve included two dope tracks from early in the Wiggidies Crew heyday— “Party” and “Straight Up Out The Swamp”. Both reflect our reggae and jazz sample roots, will become a theme in these posts as both genres played a heavy role in our influence. If you listen closely you can hear our homie Green Sllime cutting his teeth with the bars on “Straight Up Out The Swamp”. Produced by our dudes E-Sturg and Benny Nice of course, and it’d be a shame if I didn’t mention that Benny is still at it and just released his latest Casual Romance project via our 119 Artist Series which you can check here. Keep it locked for more Wiggidies Wednesday coming your way.
We’re proud to share with you the third installment of our artist series following Mojek’s “World of Mojek” and Rio’s “Xan King Cole”, today we release fellow 119’er Benny Nice’s “Casual Romance”. The 10 track project is a step in a new direction for the artist / producer and as Benny tells it the project is about “the stress of modern romance and how fluid it can be. Music is catharsis for me and ultimately the whole project is a diary of my love life for the past two years through its and downs, but mainly ups. Additionally, and less poetically, it’s my first foray into creating instrumentals with no samples, all synths, and live instrumentation.” Produced almost entirely by Benny Nice and Davis Jones of the group Blasé, there are features from producers B3 and FSTE along artist cameos from Rich Jones, Fernando Arias of The Avantist, Matty Rico, and much more. “Casual Romance” is a melodic, meditative work on love in new places, mirroring Nice’s own new experiences and conquests in Brooklyn after moving from Chicago. Prior to the release of the latest single “Gowanus”, Nice has released a visual for the single “Speak Our Mind” featuring Fernando Arias of The Continue Reading
Today we’re giving y’all a single, “GOWANUS” off the third installment in our artist series with our home team artist / producer Benny Nice. Benny has been crafting beats for years since our inception as Wiggidies Crew, through a plethora of solo releases, all of which have helped to hone in on his style, and his latest Casual Romance is going to showcase a ton of that work and growth paying off. Benny’s been putting in work for some time on this album, even releasing a video for the album last year with “Speak Our Minds” featuring Fernando Arias of The Avantist. We’ll be releasing Casual Romance next week, and are hyped to get to showcase one of our own folks’ hard work. For now, enjoy “GOWANUS”.
Between 2004 and 2013, before we evolved into 119, we were (and are) Wiggidies Crew, a hip hop collective which featured around 20 people (or more) who’d all come together in a basement and make tracks on programs before Ableton, on shitty technology, in an era where MySpace was a thing. While most of us still do our thing with the bars and the 1s and 2s, and you might recognize some voices, we hope you’ll find “Wiggidies Wednesdays” an interesting look at a forgotten era with some unsung emcees. The production is always on point, mainly from our dudes E-Sturg and Benny Nice who produced countless tracks, hundreds, so there is a lot of content for y’all to hear. The raps and flows vary from timeless to strange to goofy, but we’re gonna try to give y’all the good shit here. First in this series is “The Basement (Blowin’ Circles)” produced by Benny Nice and “Oscar The Grouch” produced by E-Sturg and Benny Nice. We hope y’all can fuck with it as we try to get y’all into some rappers from over 10 years ago. Enjoy!
YEEEEEESH. Take y’all feet off our necks for a second. Elton Aura, Phoenix, and Qari come together to flex the bars on a “Jagged Edge”, and while this is absolutely not “Lets Get Married”, this is smooth and rough all at the same time. If you didn’t know that Phoelix is coming for the production crown, we have warned y’all time and again. Elton Aura just getting started and its nuke bombs w the energy. Qari of course is a master lyrical surgeon and continues to amaze. What a trio, what a track. Fuck with it.
Who is Ethos? To be honest we can’t call it, nor should we really. Artist for sure, Activist definitely, and assuredly a dude that’s really out here— finally we have a complete project from dude to experience. Last known as a frontman for one of our favorite projects (which we hope keeps going) Thy Neighbors, Ethos offers his solo debut with August. Featuring sister Tasha, Morimoto, Smoko Ono, and more, August is at times poetic, hip hop, meditative, and mostly undefinable in a great way. We highly fuck with this project and hope y’all do too.
YOYOYO —- We’re alive, doing our thing, living life. Between editing new Sllime shows, shooting videos, putting on events—- sometimes posting New Heat falls by the wayside. Alas! Here is what we’ve been fucking with lately. So check it! MULATTO BEATS “.22 SUMMERS” Our dude Mulatto Beats concocted some absolute slappers with the likes of Mick Jenkins, Qari, King Louie, Lucki, Trapo and more. A proper project from Mulatto, .22 Summers is a master class in production from one of the best dudes doing it, and teamed with these great emcees, the songs take on a life of their own for some timelessness. MFN MELO “THE GIVER” We had heard this track a while back when Melo did it live at our All Smiles monthly we do with Rich Jones. At the time we knew that Saba was on the 1’s and 2’s, and that it was hot, but that was when Melo was doing the hook himself. Now seeing it in its most complete form, we see how hot this track actually is and it’s a scorcher. Mfn always gives 200% and with time winding to his project, we know it’s going to come correct after hearing this one. Continue Reading
Out the cut, we are proud to bring you a new single from the God Dally Auston and the Gods OnGaud. “Blue Suede Shoes” is a sweet sample flip that provides ample flexation from DA in showing off his skills to break necks with his unique flavor. Be on the lookout for more from both artists soon. It’s lit.
ALL SMILES— the showcase brought to you by JONESCORP and 119 was proud as fuck to bring you another slapper in the month of June that featured some familiar faces rocking it and as always some low key artists that def made some new fans in a packed house. These shows just keep on getting better and its all due to the amazing talents that rock the Tonic Room stage. Join us again in July for a line up thats sure to turn heads and hurt all the butts that won’t be able to join us. So yeah, come out, drink up, listen up, do it big…ya heard?
We been fucking w SEER for a minute. His production stylings always offering something a little different than the status quo out there, which for Chicago, is a hot fucking status quo. Anyway, with SEER’s latest Secret 2 My Strut EP we get to see buddy flex his artistic abilities to the max. 4 tracks, dope songs, ill production, perfect Summertime shit. Zone out, rock with it, its lit.
